Casual gaming is growing! Flash games have gone from being a geeky little niche online, to complement the being and large companies in recent years.
The reason why these games have become so popular is three times. First, they are accessible. The Flash Platform is available on all types of computers and devices, from PCs to Macs, Linux, and even smart phones. In fact, there are facilities around the world more than all the Flash Playstations, Xboxes and Nintendo Wii consoles put together! This is a big market.
At the same time, as these games have become available, developers have changed their focus and started to create games aimed at a wider audience. Traditionally, video games were aimed at boys and young men, and tended to focus on hunting, fighting or driving.
With the increase in casual games, however, these are no longer the largest genera. In fact, word games like puzzles, crosswords and spelling games is one of the fastest growing genres in progress.
Word Game Types
Wordplay are several sub-genres. Crossword puzzles and word games research style are based on the original "paper" versions and can be as simple as an online version of a traditional puzzle, or have a turning point, as a timer or multiple simultaneous puzzle.
Spelling games, loosely based on the board game Scrabble, is a very popular sub-genre and, in general, relate to the making a series of letters to create words. These games can be single or multi-player, and both rounds or in real time, but the only thing they have in common is their popularity, especially with women.
Pun based arcade. This is a strange fusion of fast paced action games, or sometimes even strategy games, combined with a word or a game of spelling. On my site I have found that they sometimes tend to confuse players and often are not as popular as the games easier, but sometimes a gem comes along which gives the players well and truly hooked!
Word games are certainly not as glamorous as some other genres. They tend to have a simple game, simple graphics, and none of the extras, including deleted scenes and flash animated intros that are so common in other genres, but do not underestimate their popularity.
The addition of free word games for your site will certainly increase traffic and get visitors to return again and again. Of all the genres of casual games, word games are definitely one of the hottest right now!
